Possible Causes
Low oil in crankcase, Faulty oil level switch in oil pan, Damaged oil level switch wiring, Excessive engine oil consumption
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, open the main breaker, and allow the engine to cool. Avoid overfilling oil.
- Step 1 – Check oil level: Use the dipstick to verify oil level. Add the correct oil type if low. If oil is very dirty, perform an oil and filter change.
- Step 2 – Inspect for leaks and consumption: Look for oil leaks around seals and gaskets. If oil level drops quickly between services, have a technician check for internal consumption.
- Step 3 – Inspect oil level switch: Locate the oil level switch on the oil pan. Check the connector and wiring for damage. Clean and reseat the connector.
- Step 4 – Test switch: Disconnect the switch and test continuity while manually moving the float (if accessible) or by tilting the unit slightly (if safe). Replace the switch if it does not change state as oil level changes.
- Step 5 – Clear code and test: After correcting oil level and switch issues, clear E18 and run the generator while monitoring for leaks.
