Possible Causes
Failing AVR, Loose alternator stator connections, Worn brushes or slip rings (if brush‑type alternator), Engine speed hunting due to governor issues
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Only qualified personnel should measure live AC voltage. Turn OFF the generator and open the main breaker before opening covers.
- Step 1 – Verify engine speed stability: Observe engine RPM or frequency with a meter. If RPM hunts up and down, inspect and service the governor and fuel system before blaming the alternator.
- Step 2 – Inspect alternator connections: With power off, remove the alternator terminal cover and tighten all stator and rotor connections.
- Step 3 – Check AVR wiring: Ensure all AVR connectors are fully seated and free of corrosion. Reseat plugs.
- Step 4 – Inspect brushes and slip rings (if equipped): Remove the brush holder and check brush length and spring tension. Clean slip rings with fine emery cloth. Replace worn brushes.
- Step 5 – Replace AVR if needed: If voltage remains unstable with a steady engine speed and good connections, replace the AVR.
