Possible Causes

Defective electronic governor actuator, Binding or misadjusted throttle linkage, Faulty speed sensor (magnetic pickup), Failed governor control circuit on controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disable auto-start, open the main breaker, and keep hands clear of moving linkages while running.

  • Inspect throttle linkage: With engine off, move the throttle lever by hand. It should move smoothly from idle to full without sticking. Lubricate pivot points lightly with appropriate oil; do not over-lubricate near sensors.
  • Check governor actuator: Observe the actuator during start. It should move the throttle smoothly. If it chatters, does not move, or moves erratically, the actuator may be failing.
  • Inspect speed sensor: Locate the magnetic pickup at the flywheel or ring gear. Check for metal debris on the sensor tip and clean gently. Ensure the air gap is set per Onan spec (typically around 0.020–0.030 in; verify in manual).
  • Check wiring: Inspect the harness from the actuator and speed sensor back to the controller for chafing, loose connectors, or oil contamination. Reseat connectors.
  • Controller test: If actuator and sensor test good but Code 13 persists, the governor control circuit on the controller may be defective and should be evaluated by an authorized Onan service center.
