Possible Causes

Faulty governor actuator stuck open, Broken or disconnected throttle return spring, Failed speed sensor sending incorrect signal, Defective controller speed regulation circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Overspeed can cause catastrophic failure. Do not repeatedly restart until the cause is identified. Disable auto-start and open the main breaker.

  • Inspect throttle and governor linkage: Verify that the throttle plate returns to idle when the actuator is de-energized. Replace any broken or weak return springs. Ensure linkage is not binding.
  • Check governor actuator operation: With the engine off, disconnect the actuator linkage and verify the actuator moves through its range when commanded (per service manual test). Replace if it sticks or fails to move.
  • Inspect speed sensor: Check the magnetic pickup for damage, loose mounting, or incorrect gap. Tighten mounting and set gap to specification. Replace if the tip is damaged.
  • Controller calibration: If mechanical components are correct, the controller may be misreading speed. A technician can verify RPM with a handheld tachometer and compare to controller readings. Replace controller if it cannot regulate speed.
