Possible Causes
Weak battery, High resistance in starter circuit, Faulty starter solenoid, Failing starter motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disable auto-start and open the main breaker. Wear eye protection when working on batteries.
- Battery test: Load-test the starting battery. Replace if it fails to maintain voltage under load.
- Inspect starter connections: Clean and tighten all connections at the battery, starter solenoid, and starter motor. Look for heat discoloration indicating high resistance.
- Check solenoid operation: Listen for a solid click at the solenoid when starting. If there is no click, test for control voltage at the solenoid coil. Replace the solenoid if it receives voltage but does not engage.
- Starter motor: If the solenoid engages but the motor turns slowly or not at all with a good battery, replace the starter motor with an Onan-approved unit.
