Possible Causes
Failed fuel shutoff solenoid, Blown fuel solenoid fuse on control panel, Broken wiring between controller and solenoid, Faulty relay driving the solenoid
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disable automatic start and isolate battery negative before working on wiring. Beware of moving parts when testing with engine cranking.
- Listen for solenoid operation: During a start attempt, listen near the injection pump for a click from the fuel shutoff solenoid. No sound suggests no power or a failed solenoid.
- Check fuses and relays: In the generator control panel, locate the fuse and relay associated with the fuel solenoid (refer to wiring diagram). Replace any blown fuses with the correct rating. Swap the relay with a known‑good identical relay if available.
- Measure voltage at solenoid: With a helper cranking the engine, use a multimeter to check for 12/24 V at the solenoid connector. If voltage is present but the plunger does not move, the solenoid is defective.
- Inspect wiring harness: Trace the harness from the controller output to the solenoid. Look for chafed insulation, oil‑soaked connectors, or loose pins. Repair or replace damaged sections.
- Replace solenoid: Remove the old fuel shutoff solenoid from the injection pump or fuel rail, noting any adjustment settings. Install the new Perkins‑compatible fuel shutoff solenoid and adjust as per the service manual.
