Generator shuts down during run, controller displays E007 and indicates overspeed

Safety: Do not attempt to run an engine that is genuinely overspeeding. Overspeed can cause catastrophic mechanical failure.

• Check controller speed reading: On the controller, view the engine RPM during cranking and running. Erratic or impossible values (e.g., 0 then 6000 RPM) indicate a sensing issue.
• Inspect magnetic pickup: Locate the MPU near the flywheel housing. Check that it is securely mounted and not contacting the flywheel. Inspect the sensor tip for metal debris and clean gently.
• Check air gap: Measure the gap between the MPU tip and flywheel teeth. Adjust to the specification (typically around 0.5–1.0 mm; confirm in Perkins/ controller documentation).
• Test wiring: Follow the MPU cable back to the controller. Look for crushed sections, oil contamination, or loose connectors. Repair or replace as needed.
• Governor parameters: Verify that the rated speed and overspeed thresholds in the Deep Sea/ComAp controller match the Perkins engine rating (e.g., 1500 or 1800 RPM). Incorrect settings can cause nuisance overspeed trips.
• Replace MPU if faulty: If the sensor output is unstable or absent when tested with a multimeter/oscilloscope, fit a new magnetic pickup speed sensor.
