Possible Causes
Blocked radiator fins, Failed cooling fan or fan belt, Thermostat stuck closed, Coolant pump failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Do not immediately restart an overheated engine. Allow it to cool and investigate the cause.
- Visual inspection: Check that the radiator and charge‑air cooler (if fitted) are free from dirt, plastic bags, or other obstructions. Clean with low‑pressure air or water.
- Fan and belt check: Inspect the engine‑driven fan and belt. Look for broken blades, loose or glazed belts, and misalignment. Replace worn belts and tension to specification.
- Thermostat function: Feel the upper and lower radiator hoses as the engine warms. If the upper hose is hot and the lower remains cold, the thermostat may be stuck closed. Replacement requires draining coolant and removing the thermostat housing.
- Coolant pump: Listen for bearing noise or leaks at the water pump. If the pump weep hole is leaking or the impeller is suspected damaged, replace the coolant pump.
- Re‑test under load: After repairs, run the generator and gradually apply load while monitoring coolant temperature on the controller. Ensure it stabilizes within the normal operating range.
