Possible Causes
Incorrect governor speed setting, Sticking fuel rack causing high fuel delivery, Faulty electronic governor module, Speed sensor misadjusted
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Overfrequency indicates the engine is running too fast. Do not operate under this condition.
- Check setpoint: Verify the rated frequency (50/60 Hz) and corresponding RPM are correctly programmed in the controller and governor.
- Inspect mechanical linkage: On mechanical governors, ensure the speed control lever and linkage are not jammed in a high‑fuel position. Lubricate and free any stiff joints.
- Electronic governor test: For electronic systems, check the governor module wiring and power supply. If the module is commanding excessive fuel despite correct settings, it may be faulty.
- Speed sensor gap: Confirm the magnetic pickup gap is within specification. An incorrect signal can cause the governor to misinterpret speed.
- Adjust speed: Carefully adjust the speed control (mechanical or electronic) to bring frequency back to nominal. Always follow Perkins and alternator manufacturer guidelines.
