Possible Causes
Failed AVR, Open field winding, Loose alternator connections, Shorted excitation diodes (on brushless alternators)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect all loads and ensure the generator cannot start automatically. High voltages are present inside the alternator box.
- Check main output connections: Inspect the alternator terminal block for loose or burnt connections. Tighten all lugs to the specified torque.
- Inspect AVR and field wiring: Verify that the field (excitation) wires from the AVR to the rotor are secure and undamaged.
- Test AVR: If you have a known-good AVR compatible with your Pramac alternator, temporarily substitute it to see if voltage returns. Replace the AVR if confirmed faulty.
- Rotor/diode check (advanced): Testing field windings and rotating diodes requires disassembly and a multimeter/megger. This is best performed by a generator technician.
