Possible Causes
Excessive load on generator, Restricted exhaust system, Incorrect fuel injection timing, Faulty exhaust temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Exhaust components are extremely hot. Allow cooling before touching. Ensure adequate ventilation around the exhaust outlet.
- Reduce load: Open the output breaker and remove non-essential loads. Restart and gradually reapply load while monitoring exhaust temperature and smoke.
- Inspect exhaust: Check for crushed or blocked exhaust piping, bird nests, or soot buildup in the muffler.
- Sensor check: Locate the exhaust temperature sensor (thermocouple or RTD) in the exhaust manifold or outlet. Inspect wiring and replace the sensor if readings are clearly abnormal.
- Professional service: Persistent high exhaust temperature with normal load may indicate injection or turbocharger issues (if equipped) and requires a diesel specialist.
