Possible Causes

Incorrect AVR setting, Weak excitation due to failing AVR, High load causing voltage sag, Loose sensing wires to AVR

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect or reduce load before making adjustments. High voltage is present.

  • Measure no-load voltage: With no load connected, check line voltage. If it is significantly below the nameplate value, suspect AVR or sensing issues.
  • Inspect AVR sensing leads: Ensure the small gauge wires from the alternator output to the AVR are secure and not corroded.
  • Adjust AVR (if allowed): Following the Pramac manual, adjust the voltage trim pot slightly while monitoring with a meter. Do not exceed rated voltage.
  • Test under load: Reapply load gradually and observe voltage. If it collapses under modest load, the AVR or alternator may need replacement.
