Generator starts briefly, then shuts down and displays E03 on the control panel.

Safety first: Turn the generator OFF and disconnect the battery negative cable. Allow the engine to cool. Do not adjust governor components with the engine running unless you are trained to do so.

• Inspect throttle and governor linkage: Remove the side panel to access the carburetor and governor arm. Manually move the throttle lever; it should move smoothly and return via the spring. If it sticks, clean the linkage and pivot points with a non‑residue cleaner and lightly lubricate with a dry lubricant (avoid heavy oils that attract dirt).
• Check governor spring: Verify the governor spring is intact, not stretched, and connected in the correct holes on the governor arm and throttle lever as shown in the Ryobi service diagram. Replace a damaged or missing spring.
• Inspect carburetor throttle plate: Look into the carburetor throat (engine off) and ensure the throttle plate moves freely. Carbon buildup can cause sticking; clean with carburetor cleaner following label directions.
• Check engine speed sensor connection: Locate the RPM or magneto pickup sensor (often near the flywheel). Ensure its connector is fully seated and wiring is not chafed or pinched against the engine shroud.
• Reset and test: Reconnect the battery, clear E03 if the controller allows, and perform a manual start. If overspeed persists, do not continue running the unit—contact a generator technician to properly set governor speed and verify controller RPM sensing.
