Possible Causes
Failed AVR, Open stator winding, Loose alternator output connections, Faulty rotor excitation circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the generator in OFF mode and disable AUTO. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Lock out the ATS if you will be working near line‑voltage connections.
- Check main breaker: Open the generator access panel and verify the generator's main output breaker is in the ON position. If it is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and investigate for shorts.
- Inspect alternator wiring: At the alternator terminal block, check that all output leads are tight and not burned. Tighten loose lugs with an insulated tool.
- Inspect AVR and excitation leads: Ensure the AVR connectors and the small excitation wires to the rotor are secure. Look for broken or chafed wires.
- Visual stator inspection: With covers removed, inspect the stator windings for dark discoloration or burnt smell, which indicates a failed winding.
- Test with a meter (qualified persons only): A technician should measure AC voltage at the alternator terminals with the unit running. If voltage is low or zero, they will test the AVR and rotor field resistance and replace the faulty part.
