Possible Causes
Blocked exhaust outlet, Collapsed or damaged muffler, Faulty exhaust temperature sensor, Excessive carbon buildup in exhaust
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely. Exhaust components remain hot long after shutdown.
- Inspect exhaust outlet: Check that the exhaust termination is not blocked by snow, ice, leaves, or nests. Clear any obstructions and ensure required clearance from structures.
- Check muffler and piping: Look for crushed sections of exhaust pipe or a collapsed muffler. Replace damaged components.
- Inspect exhaust temperature sensor: Locate the sensor on or near the exhaust manifold. Ensure its connector is tight and wiring is intact. Replace the sensor if it is physically damaged or tests out of spec.
- Reset and test: After clearing restrictions and verifying the sensor, reconnect the battery, clear E15, and run the generator. If the code recurs, a technician should inspect for internal exhaust blockage and verify actual exhaust temperature.
