Possible Causes
Loose high‑current connection, Failing contactor in ATS, Overheating AVR, Undersized wiring or poor lug terminations
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn the generator OFF and disconnect it from load (ATS to utility). Do not continue to operate until the source of the smell is found.
- Visual inspection: After cooling, open the generator panel and look for discolored, melted, or charred wiring, connectors, and components.
- Check lugs: Tighten any loose output lugs and neutral/ground connections with an insulated tool.
- Inspect AVR and control board: Look for bulging components or burn marks. Replace any obviously damaged modules.
- ATS inspection (electrician): Have an electrician inspect the ATS contactor and wiring for overheating.
