Possible Causes

Clogged air filter, Overloaded generator beyond rating, Faulty turbocharger on turbocharged SDMO engines, Injector wear causing poor spray pattern

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Operate the generator in a well-ventilated area. Avoid inhaling exhaust fumes.

  • Check load level: Use the SDMO controller to verify kW/kVA. Reduce load to within nameplate rating and observe smoke reduction.
  • Inspect air filter: Replace a dirty air filter element to restore proper airflow.
  • Check turbocharger (if fitted): Listen for unusual whine or scraping. Inspect intake and exhaust connections for leaks. Have the turbo serviced if performance is poor.
  • Service injectors: Persistent black smoke at normal load may require injector testing and calibration by a diesel specialist.
