Possible Causes
Blown starter fuse, Faulty starter relay, Defective starter motor, Loose battery or starter cable connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disable auto-start and remove the key (if equipped). Keep hands and tools clear of the engine flywheel and belts.
- Listen for relay click: When a start is commanded, listen for a click from the starter relay. No click suggests a control or relay issue; a click with no crank suggests a starter or power issue.
- Check fuses: Inspect the starter circuit fuse or breaker in the DC panel. Replace if blown with the correct rating.
- Inspect cables: Tighten battery positive and negative cables and the heavy cable to the starter motor. Look for burned or loose lugs.
- Test starter relay: With a multimeter, verify that the relay coil receives voltage during a start command and that the relay output closes. Replace the relay if it fails.
- Starter motor test: If power is present at the starter but it does not turn, the starter motor is likely defective and should be replaced.
