Possible Causes
Tripped generator circuit breaker, Open or failed AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator), Loss of excitation due to failed exciter diodes, Broken stator winding in alternator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Treat all terminals as live until proven otherwise. Lock out the generator from the load.
- Check main breaker: Verify that the generator output breaker is closed and not tripped. Reset if necessary and investigate cause of trip.
- Measure line voltage: With a meter, check voltage directly at the alternator terminals. If zero, suspect excitation or AVR issues.
- Inspect AVR: Locate the AVR in the alternator terminal box. Check for blown fuses, burnt components, or loose connections. Replace with the correct AVR model if faulty.
- Check excitation circuit: Test exciter diodes and field windings per the alternator manufacturer's procedure. Replace failed diodes or repair windings as required.
