Possible Causes
Incorrect AVR sensing or settings, Loose alternator connections, Weak excitation due to worn brushes (if brush-type), Overloaded generator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Isolate non-essential loads before testing. Use insulated tools in the terminal box.
- Verify load level: Ensure the total connected load does not exceed the generator's kW/kVA rating. Reduce load and observe voltage behavior.
- Inspect connections: Tighten all power and sensing connections in the alternator terminal box and at the AVR.
- Check AVR sensing: Confirm that the AVR is sensing the correct phase-to-phase or phase-to-neutral voltage per wiring diagram. Incorrect sensing can cause low output.
- Adjust AVR: If allowed, fine-tune the voltage setpoint on the AVR while monitoring with a true RMS meter. Do not exceed nameplate voltage.
- Brush inspection (if applicable): For brush-type alternators, inspect brushes and slip rings for wear or contamination. Replace brushes and clean slip rings as needed.
