Possible Causes
Faulty start relay in control panel, Defective starter solenoid on Volvo Penta starter motor, Open neutral safety or emergency stop circuit, Weak or disconnected starter batteries
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disable remote start sources and isolate AC output. Be aware that troubleshooting may cause unexpected cranking.
- Check controller status: Ensure the generator controller is in AUTO or MANUAL RUN and not in an alarm lockout state. Clear any latched alarms.
- Verify battery voltage: Measure at the starter battery terminals. Charge or replace if low.
- Inspect emergency stop and safety chain: Confirm all emergency stop buttons are released and any external safety contacts (fire alarm, remote stop) are closed.
- Test start relay: In the control panel, locate the start relay. When a start command is issued, check for coil voltage. If present but contacts do not close, replace the relay.
- Check starter solenoid: If the relay energizes but the starter does not click, test for voltage at the solenoid terminal. If voltage is present but no action, replace the starter motor/solenoid assembly with a Volvo Penta-approved unit.
