Possible Causes
Restricted exhaust system, Overfueling due to injector issues, Insufficient cooling airflow, Faulty exhaust temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Exhaust components can be extremely hot. Allow the unit to cool fully before inspection. Ensure adequate ventilation in the generator room or enclosure.
- Inspect exhaust outlet: Check that the exhaust pipe and muffler are not blocked by nests, debris, or ice. Clear any obstructions.
- Check for backpressure: Look for crushed or kinked exhaust piping. Replace damaged sections.
- Airflow and cooling: Verify that intake and discharge louvers are open and unobstructed. Clean dust and debris from cooling fins and shrouds.
- Exhaust temperature sensor: Locate the sensor on the exhaust manifold or near the turbo. Inspect wiring and connector. Replace the sensor if wiring is intact but E12 persists.
- Fuel system check: Excessive black smoke indicates overfueling. Have injectors and injection pump timing checked by a technician.
- Reset and test: Clear E12 and run the generator while monitoring exhaust temperature and smoke color.
