Possible Causes
Faulty glow plugs, Low compression, Incorrect valve clearance, Water contamination in fuel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the engine to cool before removing glow plugs or injectors.
- Check glow plug operation: Verify preheat indicator and measure voltage at glow plugs during preheat. Replace failed plugs.
- Inspect fuel: Drain a sample from the tank bottom and filter. If milky or layered, water contamination is present. Drain tank and refill with clean fuel.
- Valve clearance: Adjust valve lash to specifications in the engine manual to ensure proper compression and breathing.
- Compression test: If white smoke persists, perform a compression test to identify worn cylinders or valves.
