Possible Causes

Seized engine or hydro‑lock, Faulty starter motor, Binding starter bendix, High resistance in starter cables

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator OFF and disconnect the battery negative cable. Do not continue cranking a stuck engine; this can damage the starter and wiring.

  • Check engine rotation: Remove the spark plugs (for air‑cooled) or glow plugs (if equipped) and attempt to rotate the engine manually at the crankshaft or flywheel using a suitable wrench. If the engine will not turn, internal engine damage may be present and requires professional service.
  • Inspect for hydro‑lock: With spark plugs removed, crank the engine briefly (battery reconnected) to expel any liquid fuel or oil from the cylinders. Place rags over the plug holes to catch spray. If large amounts of liquid are expelled, investigate carburetor flooding or oil migration.
  • Check starter motor and cables: Inspect the starter motor on the side of the engine. Look for burnt smell, cracked housing, or loose mounting bolts. Check the heavy positive cable from the battery to the starter solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter for heat damage or corrosion. Clean and tighten all connections.
  • Test starter draw: With a fully charged battery, measure voltage at the starter during crank. If voltage drops excessively and the starter does not turn, the starter may be shorted or seized. Replace the starter motor assembly if it fails bench testing.
  • Reset and test: After correcting mechanical or electrical issues, reconnect the battery, clear E06, and attempt a manual start.
