Possible Causes
Total connected load exceeds generator rating, Short circuit in load wiring, Faulty main circuit breaker, Defective current sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Open the transfer switch to isolate the generator from the building circuits and utility. Turn the generator OFF and disconnect the battery negative cable before opening any electrical panels.
- Reduce load: Identify high‑demand appliances (HVAC, electric water heater, electric range, large motors) connected to the WEN standby system. Ensure the combined running and starting loads do not exceed the generator's rated kW.
- Inspect main breaker: Locate the generator's main output breaker inside the enclosure. Check for signs of overheating, discoloration, or a loose handle. Reset the breaker fully OFF then ON. If it feels spongy or will not reset, replace the main circuit breaker.
- Check for short circuits: With the generator off and transfer switch open, inspect the load wiring from the generator output lugs to the transfer switch. Look for damaged insulation, pinched cables, or water intrusion. Repair any faults before re‑energizing.
- Test with minimal load: Start the generator in manual mode with all building loads off. If it runs without E08, gradually add loads via the transfer switch. If E08 appears at low load, the current sensor or control board may be faulty.
- Service current sensor: Some WEN units use a current transformer (CT) on the output leads. Inspect the CT and its wiring to the controller. Replace the current sensor (CT) if cracked or if wiring is damaged.
