Controller displays E16 and the generator will not accept load from the transfer switch.

Safety first: Open the transfer switch to isolate generator and utility. Turn OFF the generator and disconnect the battery negative cable before working on control wiring.

• Check communication cable: Locate the low‑voltage cable between the WEN generator controller and the WEN‑branded or compatible ATS. Inspect for physical damage, loose connectors, or water intrusion. Repair or replace the ATS communication harness if needed.
• Verify feedback contacts: In the ATS, identify the auxiliary contacts that report switch position back to the generator. Confirm they are wired to the correct terminals on the generator controller per the WEN wiring diagram.
• Test continuity: With the ATS in each position (UTILITY and GENERATOR), use a multimeter to verify that the feedback contacts open and close as expected at the generator controller terminals.
• Controller configuration: Enter the controller setup menu and verify that the ATS type and communication mode are configured correctly for your specific WEN ATS model.
• Replace ATS board if faulty: If wiring and configuration are correct but E16 persists, the ATS control board or the generator controller communication port may be defective and require replacement.
