Possible Causes
Corrupted controller firmware, Failed memory (EEPROM), Voltage spike damage, Loose controller connectors
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Isolate the generator from all loads and utility. Turn OFF the unit and disconnect the battery negative cable before accessing the controller.
- Power cycle: Disconnect battery power and any auxiliary power to the controller for at least 5 minutes to allow a full reset. Reconnect and see if E18 clears.
- Inspect connectors: Remove the controller front panel and check all ribbon cables and plug‑in connectors. Reseat each connector firmly to ensure good contact.
- Check for moisture or corrosion: Look for signs of water ingress or corrosion on the controller PCB. If present, the board may need replacement and the enclosure sealing should be improved.
- Firmware update (if supported): Some WEN controllers may allow firmware updates via USB or service port. Follow WEN service documentation to reload firmware if available.
- Replace controller: If E18 persists after reset and inspection, replace the generator control board with an identical WEN part and reprogram settings as required.
