Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

Possible Causes
Failed AVR, Open rotor winding, Worn brushes (if equipped), Loose stator connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Isolate the generator from the building and utility by opening the transfer switch. Turn OFF the generator and disconnect the battery before opening the alternator housing.
- Verify zero voltage: With the generator running in manual mode and no load, measure voltage at the output lugs. If zero or very low, shut down and proceed.
- Inspect alternator connections: Remove the alternator end cover and check all stator and rotor connections at the terminal block and AVR. Tighten any loose screws.
- Check brushes and slip rings: If your WEN alternator uses brushes, remove and inspect them. Replace the brush set if worn. Clean slip rings with fine abrasive.
- Test AVR: Inspect the AVR for burnt components or odor. If available, substitute a known good AVR to see if voltage returns.
- Field flashing (advanced): In some cases, the alternator may lose residual magnetism. A brief field flash using a low‑voltage DC source can restore it, but this should be performed only by a qualified technician following WEN procedures.
