Controller displays E17 and the generator will not start automatically during utility outages
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Utility sensing circuits are connected to live mains. Only qualified personnel should work on these circuits. Ensure proper lockout/tagout of utility power before opening panels.
- Verify configuration: In the controller setup, confirm that the correct utility voltage and phase settings are selected for your installation.
- Inspect sensing fuses: Locate any low-amperage fuses protecting the sensing inputs on the control board. Replace blown fuses with the exact rating.
- Check sensing wiring: Trace the small-gauge wires from the ATS or utility connection to the generator controller. Tighten loose terminals and repair damaged conductors.
If E17 persists and the generator does not recognize utility presence or loss correctly, the control board's sensing circuit may require replacement.
