Possible Causes

Empty fuel tank or closed fuel shutoff valve, air in fuel line, faulty fuel solenoid, clogged carburetor or fuel injector, weak ignition coil or spark plug failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF, open the main AC breaker, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Ensure no fuel vapors are present before working near the engine.

  • Verify fuel supply: Confirm the propane or natural gas supply is on and that any manual shutoff valves near the generator are fully open. For LP tanks, check that the tank is not empty and that the regulator is not iced over.
  • Check fuel solenoid operation: With the battery connected and controller in MANUAL, listen for a click at the fuel solenoid when starting is commanded (do not crank for more than 10 seconds). No click may indicate a failed solenoid or wiring issue.
  • Inspect spark plug and ignition: Remove the spark plug(s), inspect for heavy carbon, oil fouling, or cracked porcelain. Clean or replace with the exact type specified by Westinghouse. Check the ignition coil connections for tightness and corrosion.
  • Clear flooded engine: If plugs are wet with fuel, leave them out for 15–20 minutes to allow cylinders to dry. Crank briefly with plugs removed to expel excess fuel (battery connected, ignition disabled), then reinstall new or cleaned plugs.
  • Check air filter: Remove the air filter cover and inspect the element. Replace if heavily soiled or oil-saturated, as restricted airflow can hinder starting.
  • Reset fault: Reconnect the battery, clear the E2 code per the controller instructions (usually by switching to OFF then back to AUTO or MANUAL), and attempt a start again.

If E2 repeats after verifying fuel, spark, and air, a technician should check fuel pressure, injector/carburetor function, and controller start sequence.
