Possible Causes

Low coolant level (liquid-cooled models), blocked radiator or cooling fins, failed cooling fan, stuck thermostat, low engine oil causing additional heat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Overheated engines can cause burns and pressure release. Turn the controller to OFF, open the main AC breaker, disconnect the negative battery cable, and allow the unit to cool for at least 30–45 minutes before opening any covers.

  • Check coolant level (if liquid-cooled): Once cool, remove the radiator cap slowly. Coolant should be near the top of the radiator neck or at the FULL mark on the overflow reservoir. Top up with the coolant type specified by Westinghouse (often a 50/50 premix) and inspect for leaks.
  • Inspect radiator and shrouds: Look for debris (leaves, dust, plastic bags) blocking the radiator or cooling air intake grills. Clean with low-pressure compressed air or a soft brush from the inside out.
  • Verify cooling fan operation: During a brief manual run (technician-level), confirm that the electric or belt-driven fan operates and that airflow is strong. If the fan does not run, check the fan relay, fuse, and wiring.
  • Check engine oil level: Low oil can contribute to overheating. Verify oil is at the correct level and top up if needed.
  • Thermostat and pump (advanced): If the engine overheats quickly despite good coolant level and airflow, the thermostat may be stuck closed or the water pump may be failing. These checks and replacements are best handled by a qualified technician.

After correcting the cause, clear the E3 code and test the generator under load while monitoring temperature. Persistent E3 faults require professional diagnosis.
