Generator shuts down and displays E5 shortly after starting, often when loads are applied
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF, open the main AC breaker, and disconnect the negative battery cable before inspection.
- Check air filter: Remove the air filter cover and inspect the element. Replace if dirty or oil-soaked. Restricted airflow can cause power loss and low RPM.
- Inspect fuel supply: For natural gas or LP, ensure supply pressure meets Westinghouse specifications. Check that all manual gas valves are fully open and that flexible gas lines are not kinked.
- Reduce load: Confirm that the connected load does not exceed the generator's rated kW. Temporarily turn off large loads (HVAC, electric water heaters) and test again. If E5 disappears with reduced load, consider load management or a larger generator.
- Check governor linkage: Verify that the governor arm moves smoothly and that the throttle can open fully. Clean and lubricate linkage as needed.
- Service engine: Replace spark plugs, check for misfire, and ensure proper oil level. A poorly tuned engine may not sustain rated speed.
If the generator still cannot maintain frequency under moderate load, a technician should check fuel pressure under load, governor adjustment, and engine compression.
