Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Set the controller to OFF, open the main AC breaker, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Do not continue to crank a non-starting engine.
- Check for engine seizure: Attempt to rotate the engine manually using the flywheel nut or crankshaft pulley (technician-level). If the engine will not turn, internal damage may be present and professional service is required.
- Inspect starter wiring: Examine the heavy battery cables to the starter and solenoid for loose connections, burnt insulation, or corrosion. Clean and tighten as needed.
- Test battery: Load-test the battery or substitute a known-good battery. Weak batteries cause slow cranking and can trigger overcrank faults.
- Listen for solenoid operation: When a start is commanded (brief test), listen for a solid click at the starter solenoid. Rapid clicking or no sound may indicate a failing solenoid.
- Limit start attempts: Allow the starter to cool between attempts (at least 2–3 minutes). Continuous cranking can overheat and damage the starter.
If E7 persists with a good battery and free-spinning engine, the starter motor or solenoid likely needs replacement.
