Generator shuts down and displays E9, often accompanied by high voltage readings
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: High voltage can damage appliances and cause shock. Immediately set the controller to OFF, open the main AC breaker, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Do not reconnect the generator to the home until the issue is resolved.
- Inspect AVR wiring: Locate the AVR and verify that all sensing and excitation wires are connected according to the Westinghouse wiring diagram. Look for loose or swapped leads.
- Check neutral and ground connections: Ensure the generator neutral and ground connections are tight and corrosion-free at the terminal block and bonding point.
- Visual inspection of AVR: Remove the AVR and inspect for burn marks, bulging components, or a burnt smell. Replace if any damage is visible.
- Test with a meter (technician): A qualified person should run the generator unloaded and monitor voltage. If it rises above specification without load, the AVR is almost certainly defective and must be replaced.
After replacing the AVR, verify stable voltage under load before returning the generator to automatic service.
