Possible Causes
Stuck transfer switch contactor, failed ATS coil, incorrect control wiring between generator and ATS, ATS in manual or test position
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: The ATS handles live utility and generator power. Only qualified personnel should open the ATS. Ensure proper lockout/tagout of both utility and generator sources before working.
- Check ATS mode: Verify that the ATS is set to AUTO and not in MANUAL or TEST position.
- Listen for transfer: During a simulated outage, listen for the ATS contactor to move. No sound may indicate a failed coil or no control signal.
- Inspect control wiring: Confirm that the generator start/transfer wires are correctly landed on the ATS terminals per the Westinghouse wiring diagram.
- Mechanical binding: With power off, inspect the contactor mechanism for physical obstruction or damage. Replace the ATS contactor if it is seized.
