How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Standby generators can start automatically. Disable automatic start before working. Set the Winco controller to OFF or MANUAL LOCKOUT, open the main AC breaker to the house, and close the generator output breaker. Turn off fuel supply if working near fuel components.
- Check fuel supply: Verify LP tank is not empty and tank valve is fully open. For natural gas, ensure the gas cock to the generator is open. Confirm no other large gas appliances are starving the line.
- Inspect fuel line and regulator: On Winco standby units, verify the gas regulator at the generator is not iced, damaged, or leaking. Make sure the flexible gas hose is not kinked.
- Check battery and cables: Measure battery voltage at the starter solenoid. It should be around 12.4–12.8 VDC with engine off. Clean and tighten battery terminals and ground connection on the engine block.
- Inspect spark plug and ignition: Remove the spark plug, inspect for fouling or heavy carbon. Clean or replace with the exact type specified in the Winco manual. Check the ignition coil connector is fully seated.
- Test starter operation: With auto-start disabled, attempt a manual start from the controller. Listen for the starter engaging. If you hear a click but no crank, suspect the starter solenoid or starter motor. If nothing happens, recheck battery and controller fuses.
- Clear code and retry: After correcting issues, clear the E01 code per the Winco controller instructions (usually by setting to OFF then back to AUTO) and attempt a start.
If the unit still will not crank or start, further testing of the starter circuit and ignition system is recommended by a qualified technician.
