Possible Causes
Short from phase conductor to generator frame, Damaged load wiring downstream, Moisture inside transfer switch or junction box, Faulty ground fault sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Open the generator breaker and main service disconnect. Do not attempt to reset repeatedly; locate the fault.
- Inspect for moisture: Check the transfer switch enclosure and generator terminal box for water intrusion, condensation, or corrosion. Dry thoroughly and correct any leaks.
- Check cables: Look for damaged insulation on the generator output cables and conduit between generator and transfer switch.
- Isolate loads: If possible, disconnect branch circuits and re-energize stepwise to identify a faulty load circuit causing the ground fault.
- Inspect ground fault sensor: On models with a separate ground fault CT/sensor, verify the wiring and that all phase conductors pass through the sensor correctly.
Persistent ground faults should be located and repaired by a licensed electrician or generator technician.
