Possible Causes
Failed dryer heating element, Open thermal cut-out (TCO) or thermostat, Blocked dryer air flow causing overheat, Faulty dryer heater relay on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow sufficient time for all internal components to cool before touching the heater area.
- Check airflow: Clean the internal lint filter and any accessible lint screens. Inspect the internal air ducts and external vent hose (if vented) for blockages or kinks. Restricted airflow can trip safety thermostats.
- Access dryer heater: Remove the rear panel or top cover (model dependent) to locate the dryer heater housing on the side or rear of the drum.
- Inspect thermostats and wiring: Look for a manual-reset thermostat button on some models and press it if tripped. Check wiring for signs of overheating or loose connections.
- Test heater and TCO (qualified persons): Disconnect the heater terminals and measure resistance; an open circuit indicates a failed element. Test continuity across thermal cut-outs and thermostats; any open device must be replaced.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing faulty components and clearing airflow restrictions, run a drying cycle. If E09 returns and the heater circuit tests good, the control board heater relay may be defective and requires professional diagnosis.
