Possible Causes
Failed wash heater element, Faulty NTC temperature sensor, Loose or burnt heater wiring, Defective main control board heater relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance and allow it to cool before accessing internal components. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
- Confirm symptom: Run a hot wash cycle and feel the door glass after 15–20 minutes. If it remains cold and E5 appears, proceed with checks.
- Access heater: On many Costway combos, the wash heater is mounted at the rear or bottom of the tub. Remove the rear panel to locate the heater terminals and wiring harness.
- Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors, loose spade terminals, or damaged insulation. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Test heater element: With a multimeter set to resistance, disconnect the heater wires and measure across the heater terminals. A typical reading is between 20–40 Ω (check your model). An open circuit (OL) means the heater is faulty and must be replaced.
- Check NTC sensor: The temperature sensor is usually mounted near or in the heater bracket. Measure its resistance at room temperature and compare to service specs. A sensor that reads open or shorted must be replaced.
- If heater and sensor test good: The main control board may not be energizing the heater relay. This requires board repair or replacement by a qualified technician.
