Possible Causes

Failed wash heater element, Faulty NTC temperature sensor, Loose or burnt heater wiring, Defective main control board heater relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before accessing internal components. Heating circuits can store energy; wait several minutes after unplugging.

  • Confirm symptom: Run a hot wash cycle and feel the door glass after 15–20 minutes. If it remains cold and E5 appears, a heating fault is likely.
  • Access heater: On many Danby combos, the wash heater is mounted at the rear or bottom of the tub. Remove the rear or lower panel to locate the heater terminals and temperature sensor.
  • Inspect wiring: Check for loose connectors, burnt terminals, or damaged wires at the heater and NTC sensor. Reseat or repair as needed.
  • Test heater element: With a multimeter, measure resistance across the heater terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
  • Test NTC sensor: Measure resistance of the NTC temperature sensor at room temperature and compare to Danby specifications (typically in the tens of kΩ). A shorted or open sensor will cause E5.
  • Control board: If heater and sensor test good but there is still no heat and E5 persists, the main control board heater relay or triac may be defective. Board replacement is usually required.
