Possible Causes
Failed door lock solenoid, Jammed latch mechanism, Faulty main control not sending unlock signal, Broken door handle or linkage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. Do not force the door open with excessive pressure to avoid damaging the front panel or glass.
- Wait for cool-down: If the unit just finished a high-temperature dry cycle, allow 5–10 minutes for the lock to cool and attempt to unlock again after restoring power.
- Use manual release (if equipped): Many Frigidaire combos have a manual release tab near the door lock accessible from the lower front or by removing the lower panel. Pull the tab gently to release the door.
- Inspect door lock assembly: Once the door is open and power is disconnected, remove the door lock as described for E41. Check for broken plastic parts or burn marks.
- Replace door lock: Install a new Frigidaire door lock assembly if the solenoid is stuck or the mechanism is damaged.
- Check control board: If a new lock does not resolve E42, the main control may not be sending the unlock signal and may require replacement by a technician.
