Possible Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, Obstructed drain hose, Failed GE drain pump motor, Foreign object lodged in pump impeller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Water may spill when opening the filter—have towels and a shallow pan ready.

  • Access the drain filter: On most GE combo units, the drain pump filter is behind a small lower front access panel. Open it and locate the round filter cap.
  • Manually drain: If equipped, use the small emergency drain hose to empty water into a pan before removing the filter cap.
  • Clean the filter: Unscrew the filter cap slowly. Remove lint, coins, buttons, and other debris. Rinse the filter thoroughly and inspect the pump cavity with a flashlight for remaining obstructions.
  • Check the drain hose: Inspect the rear drain hose for kinks, crushing, or clogs. Detach from the standpipe and flush with water to ensure it is clear.
  • Inspect pump impeller: Gently spin the pump impeller with your finger. It should turn freely without grinding. If it is seized, wobbly, or the pump hums but does not move water, replace the GE drain pump assembly.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the filter, close the panel, restore power, and run a drain/spin cycle to verify operation.
