Possible Causes
Failed GE drive motor, Defective motor control (inverter) board, Broken or loose drive belt (if belt-driven), Loose motor wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before accessing the rear or bottom panels. Moving parts can cause injury.
- Check for overloading: Remove excess laundry and try a smaller test load to rule out overload protection.
- Inspect drive belt (if applicable): Remove the rear panel. Verify the belt is on both the motor pulley and drum pulley. If the belt is broken, frayed, or heavily glazed, replace it with the correct GE drive belt.
- Check motor connections: Ensure the motor plug is fully seated and wiring is intact. Look for burn marks or melted insulation.
- Test motor: With a multimeter, check motor windings for continuity according to GE specs. If open or shorted, replace the GE drive motor.
- Inspect motor control/inverter: Many GE combo units use a separate motor control board. Look for burnt components or bulging capacitors. If the motor tests good but E42 persists, replace the GE motor control board.
