Possible Causes
Open heating element, Blown high-limit thermostat, Failed thermal cutoff, Loose heater wiring or connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the combo and, if gas model, shut off gas supply. Heating components can remain hot after use.
- Confirm symptom: Run a timed dry cycle and check for heat at the exhaust after 5–10 minutes. If no warmth, proceed.
- Access heater assembly: Remove the rear panel or lower front panel (model dependent) to reach the GE dryer heating element assembly and thermostats.
- Inspect wiring: Check for burnt or loose connectors at the heater, thermostats, and thermal cutoff. Repair or replace damaged terminals.
- Test components: With a multimeter, test continuity of the heating element, high-limit thermostat, and thermal cutoff. Any open component must be replaced with the correct GE part.
- Check for airflow issues: A clogged lint duct can cause overheating and blown cutoffs. Clean the internal ducting and the entire vent run to the outside.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing failed parts and cleaning vents, run a test dry cycle to confirm proper heating and that E51 is cleared.
