Possible Causes

Faulty motor tachometer coil, Loose tachometer magnet on motor shaft, Damaged motor wiring harness, Defective motor control circuit on PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the machine before accessing the motor. Beware of sharp cabinet edges.

  • Access motor: Remove the rear panel. Release the drive belt from the motor pulley and drum pulley.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the motor connector and wiring harness for damage, burning, or loose pins. Reseat the connector firmly.
  • Check tachometer: On Hoover motors, the tachometer is usually a small coil at the rear of the motor. Inspect for cracks or a loose magnet ring on the shaft.
  • Test tach coil: Measure resistance across the tachometer terminals (often 100–200 Ω). An open circuit indicates a failed tach coil.
  • Spin test: With the motor removed and a multimeter set to AC volts across the tach terminals, manually spin the motor shaft. You should see a small AC voltage generated. No output suggests a tach fault.
  • Replace motor if needed: If the tachometer is integrated and faulty, replace the complete motor assembly.
  • PCB diagnosis: If motor and tach test OK, the motor control section of the PCB may be defective. This is a complex repair best handled by a Hoover service technician.
