Possible Causes

Loose or damaged motor harness, failed motor tachometer, defective motor control board (MCU), worn motor brushes (on some models)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before accessing the rear or bottom.

  • Check drum movement: Spin the drum by hand. It should move freely without grinding. If seized, inspect bearings or foreign objects first.
  • Inspect motor connections: Remove rear panel. Locate the drive motor at the bottom rear of the tub. Check the multi-pin connector for looseness, corrosion, or burnt pins. Reseat firmly.
  • Inspect motor control board (if separate): Some Kenmore combos use a separate MCU near the motor. Check for burnt components or loose connectors.
  • Check wiring harness: Follow the harness from the motor to the control board. Look for chafed insulation or broken wires, especially where the harness flexes.
  • Test motor (advanced): With a multimeter, check motor windings and tachometer resistance per the tech sheet. If readings are out of spec or the motor shows visible damage, replace the motor assembly.

If you are not experienced with electrical testing, have a technician diagnose the motor and control board.
