Possible Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, blocked drain hose, failed drain pump motor, obstruction in tub-to-pump hose

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance and turn off water supply. Expect water spillage when opening the drain system.

  • Access the drain pump: On many KitchenAid combos, remove the lower front access panel (3–4 screws along the bottom). Place towels and a shallow pan under the pump area.
  • Clean pump filter: Locate the drain pump clean-out cap. Slowly unscrew it to let water drain into the pan. Remove debris such as coins, lint, buttons, or socks from the filter and pump housing.
  • Inspect hoses: Check the tub-to-pump hose for clogs or foreign objects. Squeeze the hose and look for blockages. Remove the rear panel if needed to access the full length of the drain hose and ensure it is not kinked or crushed.
  • Check drain hose installation: Ensure the standpipe height and hose routing meet the installation manual. A hose inserted too far or too low can cause siphoning and drain errors.
  • Test the pump: With the unit unplugged, spin the pump impeller with your finger; it should turn freely. If it is seized, noisy, or shows signs of overheating, replace the drain pump assembly.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit the filter cap securely, reinstall panels, restore power, and run a drain/spin cycle to confirm proper operation.
