Possible Causes

Failed water temperature sensor (NTC), loose wiring to NTC, shorted or open NTC circuit on control board, heater circuit fault affecting sensor reading

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power and allow the unit to cool before working near the heater or tub.

  • Access the NTC sensor: Remove the rear panel. Locate the heater assembly on the bottom of the tub; the NTC sensor is usually mounted in or near the heater bracket with two wires attached.
  • Check wiring: Inspect the NTC connector and harness for loose plugs, corrosion, or damaged insulation. Reseat the connector firmly.
  • Test the sensor: Disconnect the NTC and measure its resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (around 20–25°C / 68–77°F), most KitchenAid NTCs read roughly 20k–30k ohms (check service manual for exact spec). If the reading is open (OL) or near 0 ohms, the sensor is defective.
  • Inspect heater circuit: A shorted heater can sometimes trigger F03. Check the heater terminals for continuity to ground; there should be no continuity to the metal tub or chassis.
  • Replace faulty NTC: If readings are out of spec, replace the temperature sensor with the correct KitchenAid part. Reinstall in the heater bracket, reconnect wiring, and secure harnesses.
  • Run a test cycle: Restore power and run a warm wash to confirm the error is cleared.
