Possible Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, Obstructed drain hose, Failed drain pump motor, Loose or damaged wiring to drain pump

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Water may spill when opening filters or hoses; keep towels and a shallow pan ready.

  • 1. Inspect the drain hose: Check the rear drain hose for kinks, crushing, or freezing (in cold environments). Ensure the standpipe or sink is not blocked.
  • 2. Clean the drain pump filter (if accessible): On many Magic Chef combos, a small access panel at the front bottom hides the pump filter. Open the panel, place a pan under it, and slowly unscrew the filter cap to let water drain. Remove lint, coins, and debris from the filter and pump cavity.
  • 3. Check for foreign objects in the pump impeller: With the filter removed, feel inside the pump housing for obstructions. The impeller should turn freely.
  • 4. Inspect wiring to the drain pump: Remove the rear or bottom panel to access the pump. Verify the wiring harness is firmly connected and not burned or damaged.
  • 5. Test the drain pump motor: With the pump removed and unit unplugged, use a multimeter to check for continuity across the pump terminals. An open circuit or seized impeller indicates a bad pump that must be replaced.
  • 6. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the filter, panels, and hose. Run a drain/spin cycle to confirm operation.
