Possible Causes
Failed temperature sensor (NTC), loose wiring to NTC, shorted or open NTC circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance and shut off water supply before removing any panels.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Access the NTC: Remove the rear panel. The temperature sensor is usually mounted in the heater housing or directly in the outer tub near the heater element.
- 2. Inspect wiring: Check the harness from the NTC to the main control board. Look for broken wires, loose connectors, or corrosion. Reseat the connector at both ends.
- 3. Test NTC resistance: Disconnect the NTC connector. Using a multimeter set to kΩ, measure resistance across the sensor terminals. At room temperature (~20–25°C), many Maytag NTCs read roughly 20–60 kΩ (check service manual for your model). If reading is open (OL) or near 0 Ω, the sensor is defective.
- 4. Check for shorts to ground: Measure between each NTC terminal and ground (tub or chassis). There should be no continuity. If there is, wiring is shorted and must be repaired.
- 5. Replace NTC if faulty: Remove the retaining clip or bracket, pull out the sensor, and install the new one with any supplied seal. Ensure it is fully seated to avoid leaks.
- 6. Clear error: Reassemble, plug in, and run a warm wash cycle to confirm proper operation and that F03 does not reappear.
